Questions Meister ask — and how school leavers can answer

Professional listening during a conversation

Ausbildung interviews are rarely theatrical. A Meister or office lead wants to know whether you understand the work, can take feedback, and will still be there when winter mornings are dark. Memorised “passion” speeches tend to fall flat.

“Why this trade?”

Answer with a specific observation: a Praktikum task you liked, a family trade you watched closely, a school project that felt practical. If you are unsure, say what you have already tested and what you still want to learn — honesty beats invented destiny.

“Why our Betrieb?”

Name something real from their website, workshop photos, or a visit: product types, customer circle, or training mentions. Generic praise for “a good reputation” tells them you applied everywhere with the same letter.

Talking about weaker grades

Do not open with an apology. If asked, explain briefly what changed, what support you used, and how it relates to the job. Then move to evidence of reliability — punctual Praktikum days, finished school projects, language progress.

Practice with a structured interview rehearsal before your next Gespräch.
